Dental Crowns San Francisco

If you have broken, decayed or unattractive teeth, it affects your smile. Dental crowns can help.

Crowns are fixed restorations that replace the functional portion of a tooth. They are used to protect the remaining tooth structure, after root canal treatment or to cover a large filling or for aesthetics. Crowns can also be used to restore the appearance and function of worn or discolored teeth.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth, helping to restore its shape, size, strength or improve its appearance. A crown not only strengthens a tooth but can also dramatically improve a tooth’s appearance, shape, and alignment. When the crown has adhered into place, it will fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

Crowns may be used to:

  • Replace a large filling when only minimal tooth structure remains
  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
  • Protect a tooth that has had root canal treatment

Dental Crown Procedure
During the first visit to our office, Dr. Azim will prepare your tooth. After your tooth is prepared, we will take an impression to send to the dental lab to make the crown. We will also fit you with a temporary crown to be worn until your permanent one is constructed.

During your second visit, Dr. Azim will remove your temporary crown and place the permanent one in place. Adjustments are sometimes necessary, and we may choose to temporarily cement your crown into place to ensure functionality is properly restored. Once the crown is adjusted to fit your bite, we will permanently cement it.
